There will definitely be a third film coming. Don't forget to stay to the end for a surprise. It really felt like they put their soul and effort into it and kids will have a blast with this. Although this ain't saying much, I can confidently say this is the best Video Game Movie I've seen easily. Without spoilers, fans will be most happy with Sonic 2 and even people who aren't a fan of Sonic will still get a kick out of it. There's more locations too and gimmicks to play around with in the movie as well. The weakest parts of the movie are when Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Robotnik aren't on screen, but the scenes are still perfectly watchable and better than almost everything in the first film. Robotnik also gets to shine more too thanks to Jim Carrey's performance and having more gadgets and locations to juggle with. While promoting Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Jim Carey - who plays the villain Dr. With Tails and Knuckles added into the roster, it adds more character dynamic and banter that fleshes them out more in the story. The CGI game characters get more of the spotlight than the Human characters, the jokes land better and there's just much more going on here that fans will recognise from the games. Thankfully, with a sequel greenlit it feels like this time the writers and director could do much more. While the first film wasn't bad per se and perfectly watchable, it was very basic and clearly limited in scope and budget. I’d rather see Carrey end his career on a high note instead of a “WHY?!” note.Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is basically everything the first Sonic movie should have been. Now the novelty has worn off, the charms of the original have evaporated and there’s nowhere for the series to go.Ĭarrey is still a riot as Robotnik - which is a “Mask”-like role for him in that there is no emotion or heartwarming aspects - and he’s forced to hoist up high-budget mediocrity. The first “Sonic” worked unexpectedly well because it thrust the wisecracking alien into a small town filled with humans - a hog out of water - and gave Carrey the opportunity to once again do the physical comedy he’s best known for. Sonic is joined by Tails, another talking alien. They don’t solve complex clues so much as stumble across buttons. The Master Emerald isn’t quite the Ark of the Covenant, and Sonic and pals don’t make too many exotic stops. The whole enterprise is a textbook MacGuffin, a story in which the characters spend the runtime searching for a coveted object. Our hero is joined by Tails, a cutesy Fox with a helium voice like Tails on a chalkboard that would be more at home on a kids morning TV show than a cheeky live-action movie. The biggest question mark will be over Jim Carrey’s role as Doctor Robotnik. For those of you who are curious which hotel is hosting the ceremony, the characters repeatedly remind us they’re at the new Four Seasons Oahu. Restoring noted maximalist Jim Carrey to the epicenter of the franchise’s comedic universe while introducing two new animated characters and beefing up several of the supporting human roles. Sonic (who makes his own lame swear joke, “Holy sherbet!”) must stop Robotnik while the blue dude’s bland roommates from fictional Green Hills, Calif., Sheriff Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter), are at a wedding in Hawaii. The gemstone, a cheap knockoff of the ring of power from “Lord of the Rings,” brings its owner’s thoughts - good or bad - to life. “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” could be Jim Carrey’s final movie. In the formulaic plot, his nemesis Doctor Robotnik (Carrey) has been trapped on the Mushroom Planet (“Holy shitake!,” he yells) since the end of the last adventure, but manages to escape and help a red echidna named Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba) find the legendary Master Emerald. And so now we have an often grating sequel that shoves in more of Sonic’s annoying animal friends. But, oh no, Hollywood’s ravenous appetite is never fully satisfied. The filmmakers gave the little guy a makeover and the movie made a respectable $319 million at the box office.Īt that point, Sonic should have scooped up his magical golden rings and - like Carrey - called it quits. Two years ago, the first “Sonic” was a surprise hit for Paramount even after a wave of bad press said the terrifying CGI hedgehog we saw in the trailer was the stuff of nightmares. Rated PG (action, some violence, rude humor and mild language).
